Lessons Learned in Life

It was Mel Brooks that once said, "Hope for the best. Expect the worst. Life is a play. We're unrehearsed."

I've not had the best time of my life, but I have learned to accept the bad with the good. You don't know what life will bring your way tomorrow, so enjoy all that you've been given today.

In 1992, I gave birth to a beautiful baby girl, five weeks later I was attending her funeral. My daughter Katie was taken from this earth before her life ever really began. Since her death, I learned many hard lessons.

I learned that your life can change in a matter of seconds. "Always, live each day as if it were your last." I know this is an overused clich, but it's true. You should try to live the most fulfilling life you can and never be afraid to take chances. What is life without chances?

I have learned that you should never miss a chance to tell the people most important to you that you love them. They can be taken from you in a blink of an eye. Don't wait until you are standing at the foot of their grave to honor them. Pick up the phone today and call them, just to say, "I love you."

I asked a panel of men, women, between the ages of 16 to 64 to finish the following sentence. I've learned:

Let's look at how they replied.

I've learned that you have to work hard in order to achieve. Lakeisha- age 16

I've learned that The Wizard of Oz has a bit of truth to it. When you're lost and trying to find your way back to a familiar place, life can be quite strange and difficult. However, you learn things and meet people along the way. Though your road is hard to travel you must never give up. It is important to have your brain, your heart, and your courage along with faith to make it through this life. T.S. Wilkins - age 25

I've learned that there is nothing in life more important than friends and family. - Steve Reichard- age 30

I'm learned that success takes hard work and determination.- Shawn DesRochers- Age 38

I've learned that there are three types of people in this world, those who make it happen, those who watch it happen, and those who wonder what happened! Don't sit and wait for life to knock on your door; you have to go and get it. For the worse try is the one you do not attempt! - Emily Fernandez- Age 41

I've learned that no matter how passionate you are about something, many people, including your friends, won't care! Chris Pinto- Age 41

I've learned...that the sky's the limit and that age really is just a number! Linda Simms- Age 52

I've learned how deeply I loved my parents now that they are both gone. -Sherry Rentschler- Age 55

I've learned not nearly enough! Sue Rogers-Age 55

I've learned that if you keep trying, you'll get further than if you give up. - David Leonhardt Age 56

I've learned that what is important is not the destination in life, but the quality of the journey. - Robert C. Pollitz- Age 58

I've learned that it is pointless to worry about what other people think of me. - Brenda Duclos - Age 59

I've learned that God promises no one tomorrow. Karen Elizabeth Rigley Age 60

I've learned that there is nothing like a sloppy kiss from a grandchild or an affectionate lick from a puppy. Sue Ertl- age 64

Remember, which doesn't kill us makes us stronger. I've made some poor choices in life and I've learned many valuable lessons. I wouldn't be who I am today if it weren't for all that I have learned.

It doesn't matter how old you are, there's always something new to learn and discover. I've learned that everyday I'm still learning. - Rose DesRochers age 40

Today I ask you to reflect on your life. What have you learned?

There is much heart in your piece. Just being able to write about your loss must be a continual challenge. I trust that your heart is mending and that your child is looking upon you hoping you will value your days. Your article was wonderful.
